El Paso'S La Nube Steam Center: A New Era for Downtown

"There are almost no words to describe the excitement and anticipation we feel," Stephanie Otero tells El Paso Matters.

Otero is the interim CEO of La Nube, a $72 million STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) discovery center that opened Saturday in downtown El Paso.

The center is the culmination of 14 years of work, starting with voter approval of a quality of life bond in 2012, reports the El Paso Times.

The city agreed to contribute $20 million in certificates of obligation, or bonds that don't require voter approval, to help reach that goal.

The additional funds were raised through private donations and increased funding.

La Nube will offer a fusion of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics in a space that officials say is designed for visitors of all ages.

It's nestled in the Arts District amid El Paso's cultural facilities, across the street from the site of the former Insights El Paso Science Center, the children's museum that was demolished in 2013 alongside the old City Hall building to make way for what is now Southwest University Park.
